In reference to this CNN Article.
Few things are more disturbing than seeing someone trying to take advantage of another on down times. We’ve heard or experienced stories of banks charging enormous fees, raising their interest rates to over 20% APR, and then compounding that onto the fees of consumers who have failed to pay on time. In some cases they’ve even raised rates on people who have been current with them but were behind with an unrelated bill.
To add to the list of greedy exploiters is a new chain getting attention now – those offering help to avoid foreclosure. After phone calls and letters, the sheriff shows up at your house to hand you the papers that your house is being foreclosed. What do you do? You go to Google!
Google returns several sites that promise to help you keep your house and avoid foreclosure, but often charging an enormous fee (thousands of dollars!). The unfortunate thing is that there are government and non-profit solutions that are free of cost to these troubled homeowners, that of course these sites don’t mention. Groups like the Homeownership Preservation Foundation that provide free help and assistance and if you need legal help, you can find it from Avvo.
It seems that hard times have a way of polarizing our culture – it brings out the best and the worst in a very magnified way.
For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.
You oppress the righteous and take bribes
and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts.
Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times,
for the times are evil.
