Symbian, in an effort to attract developers to its platform, has released the source to its operating system and is making if Free and Open Source, at a revenue loss of $300 million in annual license revenue.

The  money lost, however, will be instead used to allow open source developers to re-innovate Symbian and make it more competitive in the smartphone market.  I’m interested to see how much of this code can be used in other products.  Will this mean better compatibility with Google’s linux-based Android or the upcoming LiMo?
