San Fransisco is considering legalizing prostitution.  This is due partly because of the amount of money being spent to enforce laws against it, which come to about $11 million a year for police.

My opinion is that all of this comes from a lack of understanding of the issue to begin with.  Prostitution is not a glamorous life, it’s a trap.  Whether or not it is legal, it will exist, as long as people have to choose between not eating and selling their body.  We need to address the heart of the problem – the ‘why’ of it.  We need to address the desperation and the entanglement that these women (and men) have fallen into.

Ultimately, enforcing it or not will not help.  We need both public assistance to get people an education and skills to get back into the work force, and help from the church to offer love, answers, guidance, and help.  This isn’t an issue about criminalization or not, but a much bigger problem that needs addressed.
